A game intended for younger children, Spiderman Friend or Foe starts out with unknown villains that abducted your friends, and you have set out to save them. You select a sidekick and start the game. When it comes to the level structure, you have a design that is straightforward and basic. In fact, it is a side-scrolling beat-em-up that was designed in the style of the Capcom classic beat-em-ups.

For this case, you choose to control either Spiderman or one of his enemies, and you can use the unique powers of every character. Spiderman has teamed up with some of the most unlikely of allies for saving New York City from mutant aliens that have taken over. After you have defeated Green Lantern, Doc Octopus or Venom, they will become allies that you can use to destroy the bad guys. In every level, you will be given the task of defeating the aliens as you move through the levels. Because of the large amount of bad guys in the level, it can be challenging for a kid. As an adult, the challenge however, does not translate well because you basically just re-spawn if you die.

If you're expecting a great game based on the film Spiderman: Friend or Foe, then you may want to look elsewhere. The game uses more comic book elements than what it does from the film. Not surprisingly, there is a humorous aspect to the game, but after a while, Spidey's wisecracks do start to wear on you. The game could also use a little more diversity in the enemies you fight. For example, you will pretty much fight the same three bad guys over and over. At times, it can feel like you are going into the same fights. Once you've played one or two levels, you can almost say that you have played them all because not much changes. The game does boast a pretty fun combat system, and you can choose from over 14 different characters, each with their own unique fighting style.

Sometimes, there are special items in the game that will trigger a team attack, which feels satisfying to say the least. In between the levels, you can upgrade your fighting moves so that you will do twice the damage to the bad guys. Blade is probably the most interesting fighter with a wide range of interesting attacks.

The average play through of this game takes around six hours. That's pretty good for a kid's game, and you have a variety of levels that range from Tokyo to Egypt to Nepal. Nevertheless, the biggest complaint that people have said here is how repetitive it feels and how it is too simple. For young gamers between the ages of six and eight, it's a great game to try out, but it still leaves a lot to be desired.
